The Poet That is Afraid to Read His Poems Finally Does

Well, I’ve gone and done it.

I’ve convinced myself to be brave.

This is dangerous–it confronts my biggest fear–that I will be cancelled.

That I will make a misstep so great that there is no chance to return to my calm, contented, anonymous life.

I took a step when I started this poetry blog.

I took another small step when I started my “Sorry to Bother You” Substack blog.

And now I’m working on recording myself reading my poetry.

As you can see here I wrote a special poem that speaks directly to my fears.

And then, well, I went and recorded myself reading it.

The poet reads his poem, “Possibly Certainly Likely”

I’ll get some feedback before I take even a further step and send it to social media.

I have Austin Kleon’s book Show Your Work which supports creators such as myself to put themselves out there and, possibly, be discovered.

I don’t know that I need to be discovered. But I’d like to think, when all is said and done, that I tried.

    You did it! Congratulations!

It is more than reading, It is performing. The facial cues to the feelings, not just the sound— it is more than reading.

Thanks! I feel I found my voice for this poem—it brought back a bit of the acting skills I learned in high school (40 years ago!)
