Time to Go
I am misguided at almost every turn,
as when in Florence this past week,
my wife trusting me to guide us back
to the villa in time to check out at 11:00,
having bought coffee and pottery
and had breakfast with our son,
toting tourist bags on cobbled streets
I realized as we came upon the train
station, well out of our way, that I
had chosen “drive” and not “walk”
in a world where there is no reason
to drive, and so we sped up and
then, thinking I could save time and
disregarding my phone, I said let’s
go this way, thinking I knew the roads
better than electrons do, and so we
wandered new stones set centuries ago,
and though my guidance was poor,
the biggest error I made was not pausing
to find joy in being lost in Italy and over-
whelmed not with rushing to get back but
with taking more wrong turns on purpose.
