Seedling

Water droplets behind a seedling pepper plant.
Seedling

The soil matters.
It should sift lightly
through your fingers,
bits of peat sticking to
your calluses, the smell
of crushed acorns faint
in your cupped hands,
no hint of grit when rub-
bed between your thumb
and forefinger. Seeds
also need water,
enough to soak the soil,
then heat and sunlight
of course, and should
be placed in a quarter
inch hole easily made
with a pencil eraser.
Then wait, the guides
say, for germination.
That wait should sift
lightly through your
fingers as well, bits
of hope and joy
sticking to your
calluses, the smell
of darkness faint
in your cupped hands,
and rubbed between
your thumb and fore-
finger, a murmur
of friends and bells
and cast earth.
