PrOjEcT Eight—Decked

An image of a deck board and a screw head in a spot of rot
Decked

Our deck boards are pressure treated,
much as all of us are, I guess.
The finish I applied two years
ago is already flaking,
especially when I pressure
wash them (there is that theme again).
In several places the boards
have begun to rot, mostly where
the deck screws were driven beneath
the fragile surface of the board.
That was a case of too much pressure,
leaning into the cordless drill
and failing to notice I’d screwed
it up again. Once that tapered
head is below the skin, water
gathers, and regardless of the
chemicals that were forced inside
the wood, rot slowly takes hold. Or
not so slowly. If I measure
in minutes or months, as I tend
to, sure, I can’t see any rot.
But give me seasons or years or
a lifetime, there it is, no matter
how much I push back.
